Reflection on Life: A Lesson in Impact and Purpose

Life and death

Earlier this week, I received heartbreaking news about someone I had known for about two years. He was a bright and kind young man who welcomed me on my first day at church in Aberdeen, Scotland. A first-class graduate of chemical engineering and an MSc holder with distinction (earned on a full scholarship), he was intelligent, positive, and full of hope. During one of the most challenging transitions in my life—moving to a new environment with a different culture—he encouraged me and helped me believe in myself again.

The last time we spoke was in mid-December, and he even sent me a warm Christmas greeting. When I realized I hadn’t heard from him since, I sent him a message earlier this week. It didn’t deliver, but I assumed he was busy and would respond when he could. I was completely shocked when I saw his obituary on a friend’s WhatsApp status. This was someone full of life, prayerful, friendly, and always willing to help.

His passing hit me hard and reminded me how fragile life is. It’s moments like these that make me reflect on what truly matters. While chasing our dreams is important, what really counts is the good we do for others and the positive impact we leave behind. Life can be so fleeting, but kindness, love, and encouragement live on in the hearts of those we’ve touched.

We often get caught up in the busyness of life—working towards career goals, chasing dreams, or overcoming personal challenges—but moments like this remind me to pause and reflect. The things we accumulate, the accolades we achieve, and the positions we hold are all temporary. What lasts are the relationships we build, the lives we touch, and the ways we uplift others in their moments of need.

If there’s one lesson I’ve taken from this, it’s to focus on what truly matters. Prioritize your faith and your health. Take care of your relationships and the people around you. Be kind, intentional, and willing to help others whenever you can. At the end of the day, it’s not about how long we live, but how much light and goodness we bring into the world while we’re here. That, I believe, is the real measure of a life well lived.
